Het begrip emo : Een emo is een volgeling van een bepaalde jeugdcultuur waarbij vooral de muziekstijl emocore wordt beluisterd. Emo is een tussenvorm van alto en gothic. Muziek : De muziekstijlen die door emo's beluisterd worden zijn voornamelijk emocore, screamo, punk, metal, gothicmetal en andere alternatieve rockstijlen met teksten die gaan over gevoelens als een gebroken hart. Kleding : De stereotype emo-klederdracht bestaat uit stijl, één oog bedekkend, vaak zwart (geverfd) haar, skinny jeans, een strak (band)shirt, (oude, beschadigde) Converse All-Stars, stud-riem en polsbandjes. Maar niet alle emo's dragen deze stijl, er zijn ook mensen die zich zo voelen en dat genoeg vinden. Persoonlijkheid : De emo-cultuur wordt gekenmerkt door emotionele buien. Emo's worden beschreven als verlegen, gevoelige, emotionele, teruggetrokken personen. Een veel voorkomend misverstand is dat automutilatie (zelfverminking) een kenmerk is van de emo-cultuur, hierdoor kan het voorkomen dat sommige personen die bij de emo-cultuur willen horen dit uitvoeren. De zogenaamde "wemo's". Echte emo's snijden niet om hun plezier maar omdat dat hen van alle stress bevrijdt.
